We are now three weeks into a new School Green Gym programme at St Joachims RC Primary School in Carmyle. Between now and Christmas we are running Green Gym sessions every week and every class will get the chance to take part in sessions. The idea is to get children out of the classroom, be more active, and engage with the natural environment around them. The school is very fortunately placed as they have a large playground, a wild wooded area and a park right next to the school entrance which is perfect for outdoor activities. The younger pupils have been playing lots of games that them moving, encourage team work and also provide opportunities to learn about the world around them. So far move like a millipede, squirrel survival and making wind streamers have been big hits.
As the sessions progress, the older pupils will also be involved in helping with practical tasks in the school grounds so they will be able to develop their skills by using tools and also improve the local environment.
It’s not just the the pupils that are benefiting from this project, as we are also providing training for all the school staff so they have the skills and confidence to run the School Green Gym sessions in the future. I will keep you updated as this exciting project progresses.
