It’s a new year and we are back, My new years resolution is to stop neglecting this blog so all of you out there can see what we are getting up to!
So this week we were at Easter Inch Moss in Seafield (West Lothian) doing some bog restoration work. The problem is simple, trees are dropping their seeds on the bog, these seeds then grow into small trees that suck the moisture from the bog which will (over time) turn the bog into more of a heath land habitat.
To stop this we got our wellies on and ventured out into the bog to remove all the self seeded, moisture sucking, trees. Once removed we used the trunks, twigs and branches to dam up water ways that run through the bog, this should help the bog retain water.
This is really good and important conservation work, bogs are rich, diverse and unique habitats that are also (sadly) depleting rapidly. Hopefully our work will help preserve one of Scotlands bog habitats and increase the areas biodiversity.
I’ll be back next week to let you know how we get on as we continue our restoration of this bog.
