Recent projects we have been working on seemed to involve being near trees. We were back at Muiravonside Country Park continuing with the “Rhoddie bashing” and burning. The cold snap was still hanging on and it was tricky getting the minibus in and out of the car park. The volunteers were called upon to help push the minibus on more than one occassion. Also at Muiravonside we planted over a thousand trees alongside a disused railway line which is now a trail for walking and horses.
We have also been out at Smithstone Oak Woodland in Cumbernauld where one of the many tasks is the construction and putting up of bird and bat boxes. A good turnout of volunteers ensured that a good number of boxes were constructed on site, with a small team braving the ladder to put up the boxes.
We have also been out at Dumbreck Marshes in Kilsyth where we have been removing trees from an area where it is hoped ground nesting birds will use in the spring. It is quite hard work as the roots have to be dug up and the volunteers are working in small groups to make the task a bit easier.
In addition to the above, the some of the VO’s and a couple of volunteers went to Stirling High School to reconstuct a polytunnel and raised beds which were destroyed by fire.
