On Tuesday we were out at The Linwood Community Garden to extend the raised beds. Jim and Ian got straight down to work subtly dismantling the old beds with a crow bar and a hammer.
While this was happening a few of the other volunteers were cutting large sections of wood into smaller sections for a habitat pile that would be built at a later date. Once that was done they moved over to help out with the raised beds. Some of us were trying to remove nails from the sleepers and others were weeding the beds. I was helping out with removing the nails from the sleepers and I can tell you now it wasn’t as simple as it sounds. At one point there were three of us all working on the same sleeper trying to work out the perfect angle of attack.
We quickly got all of our nails out and Jim and Ian were ready to rebuild the beds. It wasn’t long before the bed was rebuilt and was looking good. When the bed was finished we had some sleepers left over so Eddy, Ian and I moved them and piled them up in the corner. Eddy got covered in mud during this despite the fact that everyone else remained spotless. On Thursday we were at Kersland School to plant some fruit trees and do some other general maintenance on their plastic bottle greenhouse. We started off on the fruit trees and I have to say it wasn’t the best conditions for tree planting.
I have never experienced a day like it we got all weather conditions in a short space of time from sunshine to snow. Naturally as we had these various weather conditions we all got covered in mud some of us worse that others mind you and please don’t let the pictures fool you it was bad out there. I was being assessed on my tree planting skills for my SVQ unit and fortunately they didn’t mark you down for ending up caked in mud. After tea break there were a few more tasks to do like removing tree guards from previously planted trees this fell to Martin, Ann Julie and Robert. Eddy, David and I got the best job of the day fixing the greenhouse meaning we could stay in the shelter of the greenhouse until the next patch of sunlight popped out from behind the clouds. After everyone working very quickly we managed to achieve our goals for the day despite the weather conditions so well done everyone.
Thank you to all out volunteers.
