Hello and welcome back to the West Glasgow Green Gym.
This week our adventures took the volunteers out of their usual Drumchapel grounds and off in the direction of the Yoker Cycle Path to help cut back any over hanging branches and to remove some Himalayan Balsam that we find.
Well to start off our day we arrived on site to be rained upon and it didn’t stop all session. But that definetly didn’t put off any of our volunteers, who always turn out no matter what the weather. We decided that for the first part of our session we would commence with a litter pick to the left of where we parked the van. Upon getting there it didn’t take us long to find some litter and we managed to remove three refuse sacks full of the stuff. While we were there we found quite alot of Himalayan Balsam, which needed to be pulled out as it was getting close to the cycle path. Luckily the plant is very easy to remove as the roots do not go very far into the ground. Once it has been removed from the ground the main stem of the plant needs to be snapped in half and then hung over a tree branch till it rots away. This is done to stop it replanting its roots. Before we knew it tea break was approaching so we headed back to the van for a nice hot cuppa.
For the second part of the session we decided to head off to the right hand part of the cycle path, where we found lots of overhanging branches from trees. These if not taken care off could easily injure any cyclist that comes along the route; they were so bad in places that you didn’t even have to reach up to pull on them.
As the day went on the rain never showed any sign of letting up, so as three o’clock came around we decided that as much as could be done, had been. So we all headed back off to the van so we could pack away the tools and dry off.
Thank you again guys and girls for turning up, we knew you would.
We’ll see you again same time next week.
Yours
Leigh
