The allotments at Nith Street, Abbeyview are really starting to take shape now with only a few more finishing touches to, well, finish. We had a helping hand today from a lady who has been allocated one of the new plots and was keen to ‘muck in’ and get a sneak preview of her new patch.
Thanks also to Alyson who came over from near Glasgow to help out whilst the Boss-wummin Kath was up north. It was my first day being in charge of transportation and I’m glad to say that no damage was caused to people or property during my stewardship. I am however eternally grateful to Rab for being my navigator, me being more familiar with roads south of the Forth!
This week then; Well we got a decent surface down onto the paths, making the whole place look far tidier and helping to keep our boots a bit cleaner than usual!
We finally got the rotovator working the way we wanted and managed to turn over most of the soil in just a few hours. Not that it was all that easy. Tony and myself compared using this machine to riding a bucking bronco! It had the disturbing and challenging habit of sometimes lurching forward with it’s master in toe. Comedy moments for all watching I can tell you. But for Tony and I quite a hair-raising occurrence whenever they happened (quite often actually).
Meanwhile the extra wee path to the shed went in, in record time and Stephen, our generous landscaper gave some more of his time for free to help with the gate posts, path (wacker plate) and other bits and bobs.
A mention also to Michael and Jimmy who both worked away stoically sawing off the tops off posts (a task I tried myself for a short time before swapping my aching arms for the opportunity to be dragged around by the rotovator instead).
The only slight spanner in the works now is some nice scaffolding which has appeared on the house next to where we’re working, blocking some of the area we need to work on ! Ah well I’m sure we’ll find a way around this small problemette…
