The Weekday Conservation Team and their skills were needed at the Green Man Garden at Addison Howard Park during October. Compost bins were needed. These are easy to build if you know how.
We used wooden pallets for the sides and round posts to hold up the pallets.
Above: Joining us was this Red Admiral. It was a bit on the nippy side for this flutterby and it was seeking warmth by sitting on us! I found a nice place for it to sit in the sun whilst we got on with business:
Above: Martin and John feeding the pallet over the posts.
Above: The back and the sides are in. Later on, we added to more pallets to create 3 bays. This allows you to have 1 bay for new compost material and 2 for older compost that is ready for using or needs turning.
Above: Duncan and Martin tidying up the tops of the posts.
Above: The volunteers secretly got together and named the 3 stables (bays) from left to right: Silver, Blitzen and Dobbin. Plastic cable ties allow the left and right bays to open like doors. The middle bay door uses rope hung over the raised posts to keep it upright but can be completely removed. If you look closely, to the right is a leaf mulch bin. Using 4 posts and chicken wire, this also opens up at the front using the wire to hook over nails on the front post.
Recently we have been coppicing for stakes and binders at Clapham Park Wood, grass raking at several sites including The Pightle (Eaton Socon) and Felmersham.
Coming up is the start of the hedge laying season. On Monday 5th November we will be hedge laying at Carlton Children’s Playing Field. Come and join us on Mondays and/or Thursdays by calling 01234 217553 or e-mailing beds@tcv.org.uk
