This week the Glasgow Group worked with Froglife to enlarge an amphibian pond at Mansewood Allotments on the southside of Glasgow. The allotment holders have set aside a vacant plot as wildlife plot, and a hibernaculum had already been constructed to provide winter quarters for reptiles and amphibians. The pond construction was trickier than usual, being on a quite steeply sloping site. The pond needs to have shelves of different depth to provide habitat for different species, and there was much debate, measuring with string, sticks and a spirit level, and head-scratching as we tried to work out the correct depth for each part of the pond. We got there in the end, by building a giant bulwark of cement-filled sandbags, which looked like a First World War trench wall! We are assured it will grass over in time….
