Its been a funny year. In April (only 3 months ago…) there was still snow and ice everywhere, and then for the last couple of weeks we have been basking endless sunshine, with not a cloud to be seen. Watching the seasons change on the Skelton site is one of the joys of being based on one site – the site transformed into a jungle of greenery when I was away for three weeks in Spring this year, and now the meadows, unnoticed for much of the year, are an explosion of wildflowers, bees and butterflies. Seasons are good.
But throughout all this time, come rain or shine, volunteers have been turning up to help out on site at Skelton Grange, with the Friday Green Team going from strength to strength whatever the weather. When the rain is teeming down outside, or the roads have been covered on ice, or, lately, when its blazing hot, I always wonder if anyone will show up to come and dig holes, build steps and pull out nettles. But (nearly) always – more people turn up than I’d expect, bringing ideas, enthusiasm and motivation to get things done.
This week there’s a storm a coming…. but I doubt a bit of rain will put anyone off. Theres a retaining wall to be built, Himalayan Balsam to take out, and a vegetable patch to look after. So thanks to all the volunteers for all your amazing work – see you on Friday!
