Cotteridge Park Orchard was the location for the latest of many Employee Action Days with Mondelez and the Health for Life in the Community programme. Cotteridge Park Orchard has been established over a number of years by the Friends of Cotteridge Park, and it was Emma from the Park friends who began our day in the sun by welcoming a group of employees from Planning and Fulfillment for a busy day, away from their office, just a stones throw away at nearby Bourneville Place.
The morning was spent weeding and removing brambles, nettles and old plants in preparation for building the new strawberry beds in the orchard. With help from Dean Paul from the City Council Rangers Service, we soon had the beds cleared and the construction of the edging began.
After a relaxing lunch in the sun we continued the bed construction, and the planting began, with what 12inches between plants looks like providing some entertaining conversation.
With a few trees removed, rhubarb planted, compost turned and moved, and two new strawberry beds full of new plants, everyone agreed it had been a very successful day, and after thanks from the local community and friends group, we all went on our way home. We look forward to many more days helping the local community with their food growing activities, with the support of employees from Mondelez International.
We look forward to returning to Cotteridge Park for their annual festival; CoCoMad on Saturday July 5th 2014, where we will be offering free seeds and edible mini gardens for all. Come along and see us…..Join in and have fun.
