Volunteering at Barrow Foodbank

September 26, 2012 by philking

Barrow Foodbank is a charity that provides food and support for people in crisis situations.

In July 2012, I began to volunteer there through the CLIP project. I was a bit nervous at first, I didn’t know anyone and didn’t really know what to expect. I decided to work in the drop in centre, this is where people bring deliveries of food and members of the public bring their vouchers to collect food. Everybody was so helpful and friendly that I soon settled in, and I really enjoyed meeting the new people and feeling like I was able to give something back to the community.  I mainly make the teas and coffees and talk to the clients when they come in to try and make them feel at ease.

I now have more responsibility at the Foodbank as I was asked to be the Fundraising Co-ordinator! This role has really challenged me and allowed me to use and develop many different skills, as well as being really good fun!  I am currently organising my first event and I have had a lot of support from CLIP and the other volunteers at Barrow Foodbank.

Volunteering at the Barrow Foodbank has made a huge difference to me; it is really enjoyable and rewarding.
