Great Expectations!

July 12, 2012 by sianmullen Leave a Comment

We asked a group of young people who were about to begin volunteering what they were expecting their experience to be like, have a look at their answers here….

I am volunteering at Greystone Community Centre to give tea and scones and to host a game of bingo. I am looking forward to helping out with the bingo and the food. I am looking forward to making the over 60’s day enjoyable. I am also helping raise funds for the British Legion. I am organising a fun day to raise money. By Ben

Next week I think it would be really fun as you are bringing happiness to old and young. I’m nervous about what the old people would think about the bingo, hopefully it goes well. I’m looking forward to having fun with the young ones in the game we’re playing. By Connor

I am volunteering at Greystone Community Centre to organise over 60’s tea. I think it will be fun and beneficial for the over 60’s to spend time with younger people. I will be singing for the over 60’s and I think this will be exciting. However, I am worried that the over 60’s won’t like the songs and my guitar playing. By Claire

In the next weeks volunteering for the over 60’s and the British Legion I think that it will be an interesting experience. I hope to raise money and make a successful afternoon tea for the over 60’s. I have never raised money for the Legion or put an even on for the over 60’s, therefore I hope that we make a memorable day for them. If it is successful I am looking forward to making other people happy through my actions. By Libby

I think volunteering will be fun and I will hopefully gain more confidence. I am nervous about speaking to members of the public because I don’t know how they are going to act with me. I am looking forward to bonding with my other group members and having a laugh with them. Also I am looking forward to making members of the public happy. By Bethany

I think the volunteering will be a good experience and I hope that I will learn a lot from it. I think by working in such a big group we might face some obstacles but we will learn from them and use our teamwork skills to overcome them. I’m really excited about brightening people’s day and being given the independence to plan our own project. By Jemma

I think that volunteering is going to be different because I am used to volunteering in a shop rather than actually getting to look after and talk to the old people. I am excited but I am not sure how it will turn out to be. I am looking forward to doing something different. By Faniry

I am volunteering at Greystone Community Centre over 60’s session to entertain over 60’s and at Greystone Community Centre’s Gala to raise money for the British Legion. I think the volunteering will be fun and beneficial to myself and the people we are working with. I’m slightly worried that we don’t raise that much money, even though I know that any money helps the British Legion as they kind of need it. I’m really looking forward to the smiles on the over 60’s people’s faces and raising money for the British Legion. By Mia

When I am doing the volunteering I am looking forward to being the Bingo caller for the over 60’s because when I did it for my peers I really enjoyed it. I am worried that I might get some of the numbers wrong or say the unclearly. I think volunteering is going to be rewarding for both me and the over 60’s because I will learn new skills like team building and bingo calling while they will feel happier, part of the community, and cared for. By Tyler

I think it’ll be fun, I have done a lot of volunteering before so I am fine with it. I’m not really nervous or worried about it. I’m looking forward to helping the older generation out and making them happy and just getting to talk and know them more and find out about interesting things about their lives. By Luke

When I’m doing the volunteering I think it will be like I’m doing something for the community and also like I am putting a smile on peoples faces as well as strengthening my self esteem. I also think that the over 60’s will be proud and thankful that we have taken time to prepare afternoon tea for them as well as sing and call out numbers in bingo. I am nervous about possibly spoiling the afternoon by not making the tea that meets their needs and also pissible spilling the tea when it is being served or perhaps getting an order wrong. I am looking forward to socialising with the over 60’s and also putting a smile on their faces which will strengthen my slef esteem and make me feel proud of myself. By Jonny

I think that volunteering in the next few days isn’t going to be easy, but nothing is, however it won’t be impossible either so if the whole group works and co-operates, volunteering should be a fun and changing experience, both for us and the community. I expect to face some challenges throughout it that I would have to overcome as an individual as well as in the group but I believe that anything can be achieved once we set our minds and hearts to it. There are a few things I’m worried about, however problems and small fallouts are never far away as everyone is different but we as a group always manage to pull through tough times and so hence I’m quite excited to start this experience as I am certain to have an amazing time making a difference. I’m looking forward to everything in general, the team work and working together to keep the over 60’s smiling and trying new things and going straight out of our comfort zone to push us even further to increase our confidence, determination etc and it will also hopefully strengthen our friendship in the group and I can’t wait to start!
